A series of thriller stories, linked only by the character of The Hitchhiker, who would introduce and close each episode in the style of Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock. Occasionally stories involved supernatural forces, but most plot twists stemmed only from the dark side of the human spirit. The basic principle of the series is 'what goes around comes around', because when a character chooses the dark side, they often have no chance of salvation. There are no happy endings in the realm of The Hitchhiker. Originally the Hitchhiker was cast with Nicholas Campbell, but for whatever reason Campbell was replaced with Page Fletcher. Campbell's scenes in two of the original three episodes (only the third episode still features Campbell) were later re-shot with Fletcher which, because the Hitchhiker initially had more interaction with the people in the stories, cause certain scenes to appear very choppy. Dr. Christopher Hamilton, an ambitious and pompous plastic surgeon, meets his challenge in Nina Russell, a patient in the process of a gender change. He shows up to surgery the next day unprepared and he completely botches up the procedure.

John 'Jake' McElhaney will do anything to make a sale, absolutely anything. Faced with losing his job, he decides to make his next sale really count, and thinks he has it made when he signs on to work for the Packard twins, two women who have problems sharing and so split everything directly down the middle. Frances makes it clear straight away that she likes Jake, but Jake also plays up to Priscilla, hoping to not only sell the house for the two women but sell each of them homes as well. Unfortunately, the bond between the sisters is stronger than any bond they could form with him.

Bob is a married advertising executive who enjoys picking up women throughout his travels. After picking up the Hitchhiker, he runs into a beautiful blonde who he ends up spending the night with. After hearing a report on the radio that there is an escaped blonde mental patient named Ann Marie Brown on the loose who enjoys slitting men's throats, Bob becomes convinced that the woman he picked up is really the escaped mental patient, but things are not always as they seem.

Jerry Maclachlan is the owner of a rundown apartment building who promises Serita, a tenant, that he will make repairs to the building. After he becomes involved with a strange woman Tanya, he discovers a snake tattoo on his body. Both Serita and Tanya tell him how to get rid of the snake. He realizes that the two women are the same person.

Richard Shepard is kicked out of his house by his wife Eleanor. He takes in a stray dog that begins killing off Richard's enemies. When the dog goes for Eleanor, Richard tries to keep the dog from killing the woman he loves.

For months, Eric Dunlap has been hard at work on a special sound system for Kurt Hoffman, a temperamental conductor who is impossible to please. During that time, he fell deeply in love with Hoffman's much younger wife, Veronica. It isn't long before Eric realises the computer he created, which only responds to him, is something special. When Veronica realises she returns Eric's feelings and the two become lovers, Hoffman learns of his wife's infidelity and exacts his revenge on the two, but Eric's creation avenges the man who gave it life.

A non-believer in the supernatural, Detective Frank Sheen must investigate a priest's suspicious suicide. Upon questioning Father Dowling he learns that the convent is demonically possessed. Unbeknownst to the detective, the site used to be a convent that closed down when a Sister Theresa committed suicide. After one night in the place, he soon begins having his own suicidal feelings.

A young man on the run from the police takes refuge in a mysterious building where a bizarre woman, Angelica, torments him with visions of his past life while another woman tries to help him. Condemned by jeering circles of audience members, the young man is jeered on to give one final performance...only to wake up to find he is on the verge of death on an operating room table. He is at St. Angelica's Hospital, and the statue of the woman looks strangely familiar.

Diane is struggling to maintain her marriage with her abusive jealous husband John and to keep the affair with her female lover Cathrine a secret. Arthur tips John off about Diane's affair and soon finds himself the target of John's anger.

Alex, a former actor, tries to prove his abilities as a first-time director. In his first film he must deal with a first-time actress, Leda Bidell. When Leda realizes his scheme, she enacts the last scene with him in reality and instills in him a fear that haunts him for the rest of his life.

Fighting over her, Lance and Lee replay the fateful event that killed Lance's father, but this time, it is the sheriff who loses his life to Dead Man's Curve.
