As Taichi gathers intel on upcoming karuta tournaments, the others are surprised when he breaks up with his girlfriend to focus on the club. Both Taichi and Yusei enter a Class B tournament in Kanazawa, but both end up failing. Meanwhile, Chihaya becomes downhearted when Haruda tells her to stop focusing on her speed, since that has been how she always played her karuta. Arata places second in a tournament, stating that is true goal is to face Chihaya in the high school championship. Meanwhile, Chihaya and the others prepare to participate in the regional team championship. Following an incident where Akihiro attempts to include himself in the team in order to impress his brothers, Tsutomu suggests they switch up the play order to include Sumire and Akihiro, wanting to give them the second chance the others gave him the previous year. After clearing the first round, Akihiro finds himself up against a Class A opponent in the second round. Although nervous to begin with, Akihiro receives some encouragement from Chihaya and uses the tips he learnt from Tsutomu and Yusei to take a few cards from his opponent. Chihaya's team wins the round and, despite losing his own match, Akihiro gains some praise from his brothers. Chihaya becomes depressed about losing and shuts herself inside a locker but is convinced to come out when Harada competes against Sudo in order to call off the bet to make Chihaya shave her head. Harada makes it to the semi-finals whilst Yumi goes on to progress to the Queen Challenger match. Meanwhile, Arata, who lost in the fourth round of his tournament, tries to concentrate on practising his karuta but has trouble finding people willing to play against him. In the Master/Queen challenger matches, Yumi wins the opportunity to go against Shinobu whilst one of Harada's students loses in the Master challenger match. With most of the students on leave at Golden Week, Hachiken, Aki and their classmate Ichiro Komaba watch a Ban'ei horse race together, and despite the horse bred at Aki's farm do not win, she gets some relief learning that he gets well placed enough to have a chance of not being killed for livestock. After returning to the school, he pities a piglet that is the weakest and smallest among its siblings and decides to take care of it, just to later know that it will be sent to the slaughterhouse in three months.
As Arata has a brief run in with Shinobu, who believes team tournaments are for those who don't love karuta, Taichi becomes worried when he learns the team Tsutomu scouted consists of five Class A players. As Arata tries to find the right timing to approach Chihaya, Fukui West, whose three-man team is short a member due to traffic delays, drag Arata in as a stand-in, made more difficult when he is forced to take his glasses off so he won't be found out. Although one of Fukui's team members lose, which automatically results in an overall loss, Arata, remembering his time with Chihaya and Taichi, decides to put on his glasses so he can play seriously til the end, bringing the score to a more modest 3-2 defeat. Half a month after the battle on Treasure Island, Kogane, Kinoa, Shizuru, and Hiiragi ride through the lively streets of Taiwan in a taxi... but Azuma got stuck in immigration and had to catch a later flight. The girls are thrilled by the sights of their first visit to Taiwan, but Hiiragi reminds them that they're there to find the body of the Buranki that went missing when Treasure Island fell. Just then, a headless Buranki shows up at the airport where Azuma is soon due to arrive...
In a room somewhere deep in Demokratia's island fortress, Kaoruko discovers the identity of the Bubuki users that Guy had called "traitors." She asks Double why she never knows what's going on and why all this happened, but Double only tells her that if she doesn't live up to Guy's expectations and eliminate the approaching Azuma and Oubu, she'll receive the same treatment as the traitors... and that there are some things she doesn't need to know.
As Taichi laments that he's can't match Chihaya's skill level, Chihaya scouts a bookworm named Tsutomu Komano for the club, literally dragging his desk with him to the clubroom. Wanting to become smarter to become the number one in school, Tsutomu challenges Chihaya and Taichi to play a game with the cards flipped over. With this new rule, Taichi gains an advantage over Chihaya, whose memorization skills aren't as developed, and wins against her. After the match, Tsutomu laments that he lacks friends and talent, but Taichi tells him that he keeps playing, even if he keeps losing, for the reward of winning. A flashback shows that Den and Kaede were hired to fight in the match by Sumitomo. Yuya learns that when Shidoh took control of the matches he changed the rules so criminals like Den could volunteer to become hybrids and compete. Elsewhere Taiga is suddenly freed from Ryuji’s jaws by Ichinosuke, allowing Taiga to quickly flee to his ordered destination and cancel the explosion that would have killed him. Ryuji swears to kill Ichinosuke. Ui is shown underground digging a complicated tunnel. Hitomi tricks Den and tries to attack on his blinded right side but doesn’t realise Den can still see her using his snake tongue to track her body heat. Hitomi suddenly collapses, paralysed by breathing Den’s venom. Kaede also further transforms into a monstrous Gecko and overpowers Eruza. Den prepares to rape Hitomi but at the last second Hitomi overcomes the paralysis and cuts his genitals off with a single slash. Enraged, Den attacks but Hitomi easily cuts his body in half, severing his tail and incapacitating him. Kaede is left to fight both Eruza and Hitomi alone. When Azuma sees the Buranki approaching the train that's transporting Oubu, he recognizes it as the headless Buranki that attacked his family on Treasure Island ten years ago. Frozen in place, it seems Azuma is about to be trampled underfoot, but Kinoa saves him in the nick of time with Hoemaru and Himekiri. The relieved Kogane joins them along with Hiiragi and Shizuru, when the four Bubuki come together, the heart in Azuma's hand radiates an intense light in concert with a shining beam emitted by the skeleton of Oubu.

After rescuing Reoko from Guy's island fortress, Azuma and the others rest of the Japanese crew flies back to Japan... but the moment they're over Japanese waters, a flying craft approaches at high speed. From the heart waveform, Matobai determines that it's Mega-lala. Azuma leaps out to the hull of their flying boat to face the Buranki, and a battle between two heart users who could have been great friends if not for the involvement of Bubuki and Buranki begins.
Kuniko muses on the vision of Atlas, and decides to finance a rebellion against Atlas by selling the community's store of graphite (which is rich in carbon). Escorted by Momoko (over Takehito's objections), she travels to the black market in Neo-Akihabara, a place still populated by electronics shops and otaku, where she encounters many colorful figures, some of them relics of our own time. In Atlas, we learn that Miiko has become a trusted retainer for Mikuni. Meanwhile, Karin and her companions become aware that someone else is manipulating the carbon market. Karin concludes that to do so, this other party must have duplicated their computer system, and she focuses her own search on Akihabara. Kotokawa Kinue approaches Miyashita Touka and Suema Kazuko as they study at one of the tables at the prep school. Kotoe asks Kazuko for help and tells her that Kyouko was the one that referred her. Kotoe asks Kazuko to help her cousin Asukai Jin, who is one of the instructors at the prep school. Apparently, he used to worry a lot about various things, but stopped worrying and would stay out late at night and come home with blood stains on his clothes.
