The host invites actor Idris Elba to take a seat on the sofa, ahead of his return to TV in December in Luther. In recent years, Elba has taken prominent roles in high-profile cinema releases such as Thor and Pacific Rim, but is once again teaming up with writer Neil Cross to bring the troubled East London detective back to the small screen. Also appearing on the show are Celebrity Juice host Keith Lemon, Hollywood actress Liv Tyler, and veteran broadcaster David Attenborough, whose latest natural history documentary The Hunt focuses on the animal kingdom's most effective predators.

The Portuguese star joins the host to discuss Ronaldo, the documentary film exploring his life to date. Plus, model, actress and singer Agyness Deyn takes a seat on the sofa, and self-confessed comic-book fan Jonathan will find plenty to discuss with former Doctor Who star David Tennant, who has stepped into the role of the villainous Purple Man in the new Netflix and Marvel Studios super-hero drama Jessica Jones.

The One Direction boys join Jonathan in the studio following the conclusion of their global tour. Earlier in August, as the chart-topping pop-stars embarked on the final UK leg of their exhaustive gig schedule, news broke that Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne would be going on an 'extended hiatus' in 2016 to focus on solo work. The announcement prompted the hearts of Directioners worldwide to skip a beat, fearing the boys might be about to split for good, but the group has since insisted that this is not the end for One Direction. Here, the lads perform two songs, and speak to Jonathan about their decision to take a break. Also taking a seat on the sofa is comedian Michael McIntyre, whose own UK tour Happy and Glorious draws to a close.

Martin Clunes joins the host to discuss the latest series of long-running drama Doc Martin, and actor Nick Frost, star of films including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, talks about the release of his autobiography, Truths, Half Truths & Little White Lies. Plus, ballet legend Darcey Bussell gives her thoughts on how the new series of Strictly Come Dancing is progressing from her viewpoint as one of the judges, and there is music by John Newman, from his second studio album Revolve.

The latest series of the chat show closes with a Boxing Day special in which Jonathan is joined in the studio by actor Ian McKellen, American comedian and actor Aziz Ansari, actress Lily James and TV host Fiona Bruce. However, to mark the festive season, the host dispenses with his usual rounds of no-holds-barred questioning, and instead invites his visitors to take part in light-hearted games. He also introduces performances by some of his more musically inclined callers, and plots to catch everyone off-guard with a few surprises.

The veteran Hollywood star will no doubt face a barrage of questions about the making of the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which hit cinemas on Thursday last week. Also visiting the studio are David Walliams, who is fronting Channel 4's countdown of the nation's favourite children's book this festive season, and Jamie Oliver, whose health-oriented recipe book Everyday Super Food hit shelves back in August.
