Emma Banville, a human rights lawyer known for defending lost causes, sets out to prove the innocence of Kevin Russell, who was convicted for the murder of a school girl 14 years earlier.
Released from prison following the retrial, Kevin faces a barrage of abuse from the public and even his own son, Jason, calls him a murderer. Only local MP and Westminster’s new golden boy Matthew Wild is able to talk the mob down, and with no other option, Emma is forced to take Kevin to her own house. DCI Nicholas Staines is running the new investigation into Linda’s murder, and gives Emma and Dominic footage of a police interview with Tony Pullings, the man who took photos of Linda. In the interview, Pullings reveals that he paid Kevin to let him use the school to take the photos, and even gave Kevin a set of the pictures. Seeing the case crumbling before her eyes, Emma confronts Kevin about the photos. Meanwhile, Heather Myles arrives in England and pays Cambridge Master Sir Alistair McKinnon a visit. She wants as much information as possible from him on Emma and learns she has been a person of interest to MI5 and 6 for years. As Kevin's trial continues, the forensics seem to be proving his innocence and leading to an acquittal after 14 years. However, when the prosecution delivers a counter argument, Emma's hopes of a ‘Not Guilty' verdict are dashed. With Heather and Sir Alastair keen to bring the case to a close, will Kevin accept a plea of manslaughter to secure his freedom? Meanwhile, Yusef sends word that he is in the UK and wants to meet with Emma. She travels to Birmingham to see him, tracked by Olivia Greenwood who is determined to uncover Yusef's whereabouts. After the previous night's events, both of Emma's clients are in prison, leaving her with an empty house. Putting pressure on her, DCS Greenwood demands information from Emma about the missing SIM card from Miriam's phone, but Emma denies any knowledge. Desperate for Emma to help her get out, Miriam asks her to give the SIM card to Yusef's cousin, but harbouring concerns about Yusef and his intentions, Emma is reluctant.Meanwhile, Emma and Dominic meet Siobhan, a woman Tony Pullings photographed in 2003. With Siobhan telling Emma that Pullings hosted ‘parties' that Linda attended, Emma confronts Staines about the new revelations, but he refuses to help her track down Pullings.
