It's been a long night of patrol for Malloy and Reed. Just as the two tired officers are headed to the station to turn in for the night, shots are fired at the patrol car. In the blink of an eye, Reed kills whom he believes was the gunman. Back at the station, Reed undergoes a night of intensive questioning from the captain and lieutenant, as part of the superior officers' investigation into the incident. Much like the Dragnet episode, "The Shooting Board", this episode highlights how seriously the LAPD takes all officer-involved shootings. It also takes pains to show the difficulty most officers have when forced to take a life in the line of duty for the first time.

Joe is shocked to see his ex-fiancee, Emily Anderson, in Virginia City. He had met her in Monterey five years earlier, and they had planned to get married. But her strict father thought Joe was too wild, and he burned all of Joe's letters before Emily saw them. Emily and Joe are still in love with each other, but Emily conveniently forgets to tell Joe that she is now Emily McPhail, the wife of Deputy Marshal Wade McPhail. Wade is on assignment with Marshal Calhoun to help guard a $90,000 currency shipment. Emily tells Wade they have to leave Virginia City immediately, since Joe's presence might interfere with their marriage, but he refuses to leave. He finds Joe and Emily embracing and engages with Joe in a savage fight, almost killing him at gunpoint. That is the first Joe hears of Emily's marriage. That is by no means the end of her lies, which eventually get Joe shot and nearly framed for murder.

A pair of freelance reporters are determined to do a story on police brutality, and harass Reed and Malloy as their marks. The officers warn the reporters to cease their behavior, but they don't and they end up causing a tragedy.

Ben's new horse throws him down a steep slope, injuring his back. Joe tries to round up some help, but the settlers in the valley live in fear of the devious owner and his hired help. Joe goes for help from a man named Thornton, but he is wounded by the lowlife cowboys, and has no choice but to ask them for help. A very imaginitive and visually creative dream Ben has of Joe calling out to him and falling beside him, before waking up and realizes he has just had a terrifying nightmare.

Frank Medford, a figure from Ben's "wild, misspent youth", shows up in Virginia City, and though down on his luck, creates troubles for the Cartwrights by claiming to be a successful businessman.

When their two-way radio is broken, Roy treats the man without proper medical supervision, causing the man's doctor to attack the paramedic program. Cases handled include a hit-and-run which seriously injured a young girl, a synagogue who had their Hebrew-based typewriter and money stolen, a drunk woman sitting on a lawn who is spurned by her daughter when the officers take the drunk there, and while visiting T.J.'s wagon, T.J. clues them in on a disgruntled former painter who is planning revenge, and when the officers arrive at the studio shots are fired, two painters are injured; the SWAT team is brought in to rescue another painter and capture the shooter.

#36 - Legend for a Lawman

The Virginian - Season 3 - Episode 24

In Cobb's Run, Kansas, while waiting for the Virginian, Randy Benton is framed for a $50,000 payroll robbery. His defence, that the legendary but aging town marshall, Floyd Buckman (Ford Rainey), had inadvertently allowed the robbers into the bank, is scoffed at by the locals. As a result, Randy is sentenced to be hanged. The Virginian tries to track down the the real robbers to prove Randy's innocence and in desperation even breaks Randy out of jail. In the end however, Randy's salvation is in the hands of the legendary lawman.

A woman who was injured in her car accident is worried about her dog, yet John makes an agreement with Dixie and Roy, to take care of the dog, which complicates his life. At the hospital, Doctors treat a girl who has breathing problems and a man who shows up drunk. Dixie tells both the orderly and security to find a young lady, who's a close friend. Once found, she also talks to the close friend, whose man is a diabetic. At a party, when a man is experiencing chest pains, his guests thinks he's kidding. The paramedics rescue an injured hunter.

Quincy, M.E. - Season 6 - Episode 3

A lawyer, who also was a small time coke dealer, is murdered by a group of crooks who inject him with a lethal dose of cocaine. The killers then try to make it look like an accident by putting him in his car and having it drive off the road and explode. However, the plan goes awry when the victim is thrown from the car before it explodes. The killers then blackmail the son of one of Quincy's colleagues to try to get him to get his father to fix the autopsy so that there is no trace of cocaine in his system. When Quincy finds out what happens he tries not only to save his friend's reputation, but possibly his life.

When a dying deputy swears in Thad to capture killer Fred Bateman, Thad ends up in a Quaker town, in which the people can not tell which one is the wanted man.

Quincy, M.E. - Season 8 - Episode 6

Quincy has to testify in the court of a small town. The witnesses in the case are pressurized into lying and Harry Muller, a bullying murderer, goes free. Within half an hour of the court case having been dismissed Harry Muller is found dead. The six men in the shop where he died all say they killed him, firing one shot each from his gun. The police chief is happy to call the death self defense but Quincy knows that it was murder and insists he will find out which one of them really killed him.

The man extracting nitroglycerin from dynamite for the gang, begins to lose his nerve in the extremely dangerous process.

Bonanza - Season 4 - Episode 9

Billy Horne is a white man who was captured by the Shoshone when he was six. He comes into Ben & Joe's campsite one night uninvited. They capture him and take him to town. Roy Coffee wants to put him in jail for safekeeping, but Ben says he'll take him to the Ponderosa. They buy Horne clothes and become friends to him. A guy named Milton Tanner says the deed to the Ponderosa is weak and tries to take a third of it. Billy goes to Tanner's ranch and warns him that he will kill him if he tries to take the land. Tanner turns his dog loose on Billy. Billy kills the dog and then Tanner, who is going for a gun. Billy pleads guilty, but breaks out. Eventually he goes back with Joe and tells what really happened.
