To make matters worse, John turns up declaring his undying love but Ben's not interested. Ben confides in Danny about what really happened—Danny warns him if Tony decides to press charges, he could be arrested for GBH, or manslaughter if he dies. Ben realises the serious implications and takes action: moments later, he tells Diane his decision to donate his kidney and she does a blood test. Is Ben trying to save his own skin? There's a dramatic start to the festive season in Holby following the gas explosion, which has left siblings Nic and Kelly fighting for their lives. The pair are rushed into hospital, where Jess keeps a vigil by Nic's bedside, while Kelly is rushed into theatre—and for Ric, who knows his colleague is a deranged murderess, this proves a real test of his professionalism, as he resists the temptation to just let her die. On a lighter note, Tom hosts the Holby Christmas bash, where an inebriated Tricia makes a complete spectacle of herself, while ladies' man Mubbs surprisingly opts to give the party a miss and do a spot of babysitting for Rosie instead.

The brothers MacDonald attempt to put their differences aside and Archie decides to share more responsibilites with Paul. Archie is coaching the Glenbogle five-a-side team for their big match against Glencampbell. When Paul offers to take over Archie's coaching duties to allow him to get on with important "Estate" business, the Laird reluctantly agrees to let his brother take his place. Lexie takes young, talented footballer Angus under her wing. She soon discovers the youngster has some attitude problems and is being dogged by a mysterious old man, Hamish McKinnon. Lexie asks Paul to take it easy on Angus, but Paul doesn't think mollycoddling him is the answer to his problems. Meanwhile, mild-mannered Golly is thrown by the return of his estranged daughter, Jessica, who wants to make her home alongside her father in Glenbogle. Golly is also shocked by the news that Jess has been dating her University lecture, Dr Sean Cook, who is twice her age. Archie only dissuades Golly from traveling to Glasgow to confront Cook by volunteering to go to the city to talk to the lecturer himself, face to face. Archie's travelling companion is Duncan, who is on a secret mission to carve out a career for himself at a top Glasgow hotel. Molly, meanwhile, attempts to avoid Andrew's invitation to go away on a romantic weekend, fearing that she's not quite ready for a new romance.

Another day in A&E and things are hotting up between Lara and Patrick - even the bump Lara gives Patrick's car can't dent his feelings for her. Things are going less well for poor Dillon who's trying to disengage himself from Gemma, without much success. Charlie's pulled a few strings to get her a hostel place but she's reluctant to leave him. Dillon, however, is only too eager to see Gemma move on. It's Tony's first day as the department's EDA and the staff play a little practical joke on him with bedpans! He slips back into his old security role when a patient gives Lara a vicious slap. Tony is all for calling back-up but Lara restrains him. She guesses, correctly, that the patient is a manic depressive and that they just need to calm the situation. On seeing Lara's shiner, Patrick comments that this is becoming a habit with her! Dillon drops Gemma off at the hostel on his way to work. She's clearly upset to be leaving him and cryptically says that everything has to come to an end.
