Abenteuer Neuseeland“ lässt die Zuschauer eintauchen in die faszinierende Welt Neuseelands. Der Zweiteiler verknüpft aus deutscher Sicht die Geschichte des Inselreichs mit der Gegenwart. Tiefe Regenwälder, riesige Gletscher, fauchende Vulkane, eine zerklüftete Küste: An kaum einem anderen Ort der Welt prallen so viele Landschaftsformen auf so engem Raum aufeinander wie in Neuseeland. Hier konnte sich die Natur lange Zeit ungestört entfalten. Neuseeland gehört zu den am spätesten von Menschen besiedelten Gegenden des Planeten. Erst im 13. Jahrhundert kamen die Maori aus Polynesien mit Booten auf die Inseln mitten im Südpazifik, die Europäer folgten mehrere hundert Jahre später. Es waren deutsche Wissenschaftler wie Julius von Haast, die Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts Neuseeland erforschten. Das „Land der langen weißen Wolke“, wie die Maori ihre Heimat nennen, war weitgehend unentdeckt. Voller Leidenschaft bereiste von Haast das Land. Er entdeckte Berge und Flüsse, ausgestorbene Riesenvögel und gründete das erste Museum Neuseelands. Parallel zu den Wissenschaftlern kamen die Glücksjäger. Sie verließen die Enge und Europa, um am anderen Ende der Welt ein neues Leben zu beginnen. Männer wie Bendix Hallenstein. Er baute ein Textilimperium auf und wurde sogar zum Bürgermeister von Queenstown ernannt. Bis heute tragen dutzende Filialen in Neuseeland seinen Namen. Das Inselreich im Südpazifik ist auch heute ein Traumziel vieler Europäer. Lange Sandstrände, sanfte Hügelketten und zerklüftete Vulkane dominieren die Nord-Insel. Die Süd-Insel hingegen wird geprägt von den Neuseeländischen Alpen, einem mächtigen Gebirgszug, von dem aus sich riesige Gletscher bis ins Tal schieben. Dort treffen sie auf dichte, gemäßigte Regenwälder. Diese vielfältige Natur sucht weltweit ihresgleichen und begeistert auch moderne Wissenschaftler und Glücksritter aus Deutschland.
