Set in Spanish Basque Country and taking place over thirty years during the separatist terrorism of ETA, Patria tells a story through the eyes of two families divided by the violent conflict. It follows Bittori and her family, whose lives implode the day ETA kills her husband, Txato, on his doorstep. The relationship with her intimate friend Miren, whose son belongs to an ETA command, also comes to an end. Both families must deal with grief and moral contradictions while life goes on.
Bittori finally receives a letter from Joxe Mari. On the way to the cemetery to tell her husband the contents of the letter, the last day the family spent together in Zaragoza comes to mind, unaware that tragedy awaited their return.
Arantxa’s budding friendship with Bittori drives her to go behind her mother’s back and reach out to Joxe Mari with an urgent request.
With Joxe Mari on the run and threats against Txato escalating, life becomes increasingly difficult for both Bittori’s and Miren’s families.
