"Montevideo, Taste of a Dream" is a 2010 Serbian TV series directed by Dragan Bjelogrlić about the events leading to the participation of the Yugoslavia national football team at the first FIFA World Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay in July 1930. The story is loosely based on the novel Montevideo, Bog te video by the prominent Serbian sports journalist Vladimir Stanković. He drew inspiration to write a romanticized depiction of the late 1920s Serbia and the events that popularized the game of football in the country after having watched the American film The Game of Their Lives.

Young Aleksandar Tirnanic - Tirke is faced with a dilemma wether to get a job in a factory or to try to play football professionally. He visits a practice in BSK where he shows off his talent but also looses sympathies from teammates because of his immature behavior. Football Federation of Yugoslavia receives and invite to take part in the first ever World Cup in Uruguay.

Only European team left in the competition, Yugoslavia, is preparing for the quarterfinals game against Bolivia. While Pako and Stanoje found a way to get the results to Belgrade fast, back home many have gathered awaiting news from the game and thinking that Stanoje will call over the phone. First half is goalless but in the second half strikers are up to the task.

Back home, people have gathered at Rajko’s cafe to read Bora’s report from the trip in the newspapers. Only one professional player, playing in France, has agreed to play for the national team. He waits for the team in France and joins them on the trip. Train ride ends in Marseille, where they must board the ship. Little Stanoje is not on the travelers list, so them must think of a way to smuggle him on board.

National team of Yugoslavian Kingdom starts their trip to Uruguay with the train to Marseille without knowing that little Stanoje has followed them onto the train. While the whole team is excited about the trip, Tirke is writing a love letter to Rosa. Back home, Rajko is having a party for farewell to players. The team travels through Croatia where they are joined by two pocket pickers, Bracika and Duka.

After big win against Brazil, organizers are giving better treatment to Yugoslavia and move them to a luxury hotel. Uruguayan journalists can’t stop with praises and the congratulations are coming from around the globe. American scout Hotchkins wants to sing some players. While the atmosphere in the team changes after Hotchkins’s arrival, Kike invites Tirke for a family dinner at his house.

National team arrives to Montevideo. Instead of official welcoming they are forced to walk to the bus which will take them to a suburban part of city. Hotel which they are staying in doesn’t even have electricity and players have hard time managing in the dark. Youthful curiosity will get them out of bed for a long stroll during the night full of surprises.

After returning from Kotor, Rosa begins her new life. She gets a job in a Bank, apartment and she continues to meet with Kiril. Rajko sends a telegram to Tirke that the wedding is postponed. While the players are celebrating Stanoje’s birthday, Mosa gets seriously ill. Mosa’s illness brings big concern for everyone. Next morning the ship arrives to Uruguay.

The first night for the players on board the ship where people from all around the world are present. Ivica Bek thinks that he is the biggest star in the team and most important. While he is seducing beautiful American lady, little Stanoje is fascinated by a girl and wants to write her a letter. Same night, there is a storm, and lots of people on board get sick. Back home, Rajko and Bogdan have a fight.

The train to Marseille suddenly stops and is boarder by duchess Helena Klodovska and her mother. While there is chaos on train because of the two beautiful women, Zivkovic and Hadzi are trying to charm the duchess, but she is showing affection towards someone totally different. While the players are learning Spanish, Stanoje is still hiding in the cargo part of the train. Back home, Eli is inviting Rosa to go with her to the sea side.

Preparations have begun, but the management of national team decides to give their spot to Bulgaria due to lack of finances. They organize a friendly game with Bulgaria in Belgrade. The news about them dropping from the competition brings everyone together in an attempt to raise enough money for the trip.

The opening of the World Cup and the draw have begun. General public believes that Yugoslavia has no chances for a good result. Draw is complete and the first game will be against the main favorite for winning, Brazil. The news travel home. Ivica Bek continues his romance with Konsuela, while Tirke has an encounter with Dolores’s brother.

Scout Hotchkins managed to convince five of Yugoslavian players to join him on a tour across America which will bring them the money and fame. In the meantime, in semifinals Yugoslavia draws Uruguay. While Uruguayans don’t like the draw, Yugoslavian players are happy to prove themself once more. Because of Hotchkins’s proposal, two days prior to the game, there is division within the team. On top of that, no one knows where Tirke is.

After a great game and the win against Brazil, Yugoslavia has become the sensation of the tournament. Players are celebrating in Montevideo. Everyone on the streets are congratulating them. The relationship between Tirke and Kike is getting better. The win is celebrated in the local bar where the singer Bianka devotes her performance to Jaksic who gets a new nickname - El Grande Milovan!

The team has the first training prior to the game with Brazil. Additional pressure is due to the fact that they do not have original jerseys. While back home people are debating about the game with Brazil, at the stadium no one is doubting the win for Brazil. The team makes their way to the field a bit scared.

Players can’t resist the atmosphere on the street and they go out to experience nigh life. While Tirke is spending the romantic night with his Uruguayan friend Dolores. Mosa is feeling worse. He is unhappy, loosing they will for football, and wants to start from beginning in Montevideo. Milutinac becomes harder on guys because the tango and girls are distracting them from the reason why they are there in the first place.

Rajko is conducting preparations for Tirke’s and Rosa’s wedding, without their knowledge. The Russian Kiril is occupying Rosa’s attention more and more.

Andrejka let’s Boza take Radoje on the trip. The team arrives at the train station at the last minute and due to some circumstances, Tirke didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Rosa.
