A man is killed in his own home during a candlelit dinner. Suspicions are concentrated in two directions: the man's ex-wife and the infamous "Pimpernel Scarlet", a professional theft, who lures men through some marriage agencies. Captain Anceschi and Marshal Cecchini investigate the "Lonely Hearts" agency while Don Matteo, worried about Pippo, who has decided to move in with his new girlfriend, begins to shed light on the murder. The culprit turns out to be the owner of "Lonely Hearts", who is in love and jealous of Gloria, a young woman who is his accomplice in the agency's scams, when faced with the news of the love that has blossomed between her and a client, and her following don't work for him anymore, he killed the woman's lover during an argument....

To deal with the substantial medical expenses, Cecchini, instead of asking his friends for help, relies on a financial institution, thus ending up the victim of a legalized scam. When he realizes it, it's too late, the trap has already been sprung.

Natalina is rushed to the hospital for a tachycardia attack. While Don Matteo is in the hospital to assist the housekeeper, a strange accident occurs: a doctor falls from the fourth floor of the hospital. To overcome the code of silence that reigns in the hospital, Anceschi decides to infiltrate Cecchini as a nurse in the ward. Soon, however, investigation of burning that the young man was leading comes to light. Meanwhile, Laura Respighi, intelligent and attractive woman comes to Gubbio, as replacement of candidate. She not only wins the election but will also lose her head to Captain Anceschi.
