While walking through a residential neighborhood in Beika City, Conan and Kogoro come across a crowd of police and onlookers in front of a mansion. The mansion is the home of popular novelist Tawake Shintaro, who was found shot dead. Though there was a gun in the study where the murder took place, there are no witnesses. The body was discovered by his apprentices Akaike Naoya and Degawa Miyuki. He additionally had apprentices Bito Ryunosuke and Chigasaki Haruo for a total of four. The kids wonder if he's come to visit a friend, but Conan explains that the building is new and deduces that Detective Chiba must be conducting a stakeout here. They follow him inside, where they find Detective Takagi as well. The Detective Boys ask to stay until the professor can come pick them up and learn that the police are staking out this building because of the jewelry store robbery that occurred the previous week.

While riding a monorail to the bay coast, Conan and Kogoro witness another rider being shot and injured by a sniper.
