Powell intends to get an exclusive story from publicity-shy rocker Diz Wilder. Minus his wig and redheaded band, Diz Wilder sets off for a day of sightseeing, dressed neatly in a tweed jacket. Without letting on that she's a journalist, J.J. manages to meet Diz, who claims to be a travel agent. After spending the entire day and night together, J.J. refuses to expose Diz, but her editor publishes the article anyway.

Susan points out that this is Howard's speciality and should be the one to counsel the woman. Spenser is less than elated to bring in the doctor.

While waiting for the kidnapper Dan calls Paul's wife and plays a tape of the kidnapper and starts to talk to him, which means that she was in on it. It seems that she's tired of being Paul's wife. Leon, who dropped the ransom and was left in the desert by the kidnapper but who managed to hang on to the van. Dan arrives to take out the kidnapper and Paul's manager, who is also in on it, with Leon's help.
