Heartbeat - Season 5 - Episode 5
Ruby asks Blaketon to dinner, they then meet on a number of other occasions, Phil and Alf enjoy teasing Nick over his mum's potential romance with Oscar! - but to Ruby's disappointment, Blaketon doesn't take the hint, and Ruby pronounces him ‘dead from the neck down'! An illiterate man , Eddie is outraged when a cottage to rent was promised to him by his Aunt but it ends up being sold. His girlfriend calls of their wedding because they don't have a house. Another man is after his girlfriend and sets out to frame Eddie for smashing several windows, but Nick eventually uncovers the truth. Greengrass tries his luck at selling some of his property, but it back fires. Auntie Eileen comes to visit, but the way Ruby sees it is that it leaves her free to go back to London, as she assumes Eileen will stay and help out for a while - which as we know, it ends up being a bit longer than that!

After a conversation with Ken, Vera figures out what's really going on. She tells Tyrone that Jack and his friend will regret making a fool out of her! Later, she tells Jack that she's called Mr Broxbourne's office and invited him for dinner on Friday. Jack quickly tells Ron who calls Vera and they set up dinner for Friday . . . Wanda reveals to Blanche that since Kenneth isn't married he's fair game! Later, she tries to move in on Ken but ends up scaring him more than anything else! Katie admires Amy and tells Tracy that she wants a baby. Tracy can't really see the logic! Fred in faced with the fact that he has to confess his sins to Ashley. He puts it off all day but when Danny sets Ashley on the trail, Fred is forced to tell him that he's lost the shop. Ashley is very disappointed and upset and tells Fred that he'll never forgive him for ruining his future!

Tracy comes and asks a tried and depressed Steve for a job. He claims they already have somebody. Mike brings his son Adam to the factory and asks Danny to find a bit of work for him. Danny puts him in charge of getting the girls cakes and tea. While in Roy's Rolls Adam chats with Sarah, Candice and Warren. He invites Sarah to go skating with him that evening. She accepts. Patrick reports for work on crutches following an accident. Unable to drive, he attempts to assist Eileen on the switch but fails. Vince annoys Roy by ripping a voucher out of one of the café newspapers. Audrey is tired since her neighbours are working on their house during the night. She accepts Fred's offer to stay with him for a few days while Ashley and Claire are away. Rosie and Craig have dyed their hair jet black in the Websters' bathroom. Rosie claims they won't be able to wait for it to wash out as the world is ending on 17th March. Ian opens a bottle of wine and invites Sally to stay for a drink. She agrees but delays her dinner with Kevin as a result. As Jason walks Violet to the bus stop, he asks her to move in with him. She is gobsmacked. During their drink Ian comes on pretty strong with Sally and he tells her he is falling in love with her.

Although Maria's face often tells a different story . . . Norris, Ken and Roy all get into an argument over what to read and one thing leads to another when they decide to establish a book club. However, not all of the members are up to Norris' standards when Liz decides to join! They spend much time arguing which books to read! Sally decides to confide in Gail over her little affair! But Sally doesn't get the support she wanted as Gail warns her to be very careful. Sally tells her that nobody's going to know except for the three who already do so nobody will get hurt. Gail isn't so sure.

Meanwhile, when Ian disappears into his office alone with a woman, Sally decides its time to get her revenge and she calls Justine who comes running! However, it turns out that the woman in the office is just the accountant and Justine arrives just late enough not to make a complete fool of herself. Later, Ian tells Sally that he wasn't impressed with her littler performance with Justine earlier and decides to take out revenge by telling Kevin! Mike tells Danny how Penny refused to marry him insisting he needs to see a doctor. Danny's secretly delighted, telling Mike he's best off without her. Sally apologises for having a go at Hayley and admits she's neglected Sophie of late. Adam and Mike row. Adam thinks Mike should apologise to Penny. Mike disagrees. Jack does his first nude modelling for Hilary's art class. She pays him £25. Danny wins a big factory order from Meadows. Mike's delighted and gives him the engagement ring he'd bought for Penny telling Danny to give it to Leanne as a gift. Sean clocks Phil looking at Eileen and is convinced Phil fancies her. Craig shins up the wall in the Websters' back yard and talks to Rosie through her bedroom window. They vow to stick together declaring their love for each other. Eileen's upset to find Sarah at No. 11 and insists Jason send her home. Danny gives Leanne the ring from Mike. Leanne's overwhelmed and slips off her clothes to show her appreciation!

Norris thinks Rita's behaving strangely when he hears hip hop music coming from her flat. Steve says he's heard her through the wall talking to herself. Tyrone tells Vera he's finished with Maria. Vera's thinks he's done the right thing. Fiz observes that Maria's more upset about being dumped than actually losing Tyrone. Clifford calls in the café and asks Roy if he would like to help him set up his model railway. Roy's delighted. Tyrone tells Maria he still loves her but he knows she doesn't want to spend the rest of her life with him and that's why he finished with her. Kelly's pleased to hear the police caught the mugger who took her bag. While at the station collecting her things she sees Becky, an old acquaintance from jail. Becky's been arrested for shoplifting. Kelly feels sorry for her and gives her some money. Tyrone gets the old burger van engine running. Molly tells him how clever he is and gives him a kiss which surprises Tyrone. Eileen asks Ed outright how he feels about her. She's pleased when he says he really fancies her but wants to take things slowly as they could have a future. Rita persuades Stacy to spend a couple of hours in Manchester with her. When they return they're shocked to find the flat has been burgled. Stacy's convinced Stuart, the man who beat her up, is behind it. Rita insists she's going to call the police despite Stacy begging her not to.

Eileen's gutted when Deirdre tells her as long as she's with Ed she's no longer a friend. Sally's furious with Janice for nicking her clocking in card. Janice is still trying to blame Kevin for Leanne's car crash. Becky tracks down Kelly and tells her she's got a job interview and needs to borrow some clothes. Kelly agrees to meet her at Lloyd's flat later. Blanche tells Ed that nobody will ever forgive him and he should leave. Eileen suggests to Ed that may be they should think about moving away. Fred and Bev throw an engagement party in the Rovers. Ashley and Shelley realise their parents are in love and give them their blessing. Emily overhears Jack talking about Ernie's murder and goes home upset. Ken arrives home to find Deirdre in tears. Deirdre tells him how she kissed a bloke when she was drunk and how he blackmailed her into processing his planning application and now her boss has found out and she stands to lose her job. Ken's supportive and promises to stand by her. Fred gets down on one knee and proposes again to Bev and gives her a ring in front of all their friends. She accepts. Fred also announces Claire's pregnancy. Becky thanks Kelly profusely for the clothes. Kelly tells her she can keep them just wanting to be rid of Becky. Kelly confides in Lloyd she thinks Becky's too clingy. Shelley's worried when Fred makes an off the cuff remark about Bev becoming landlady of the Rovers.

Mike has a rare moment of lucidity and looks better than he has for days but it's short-lived and he soon returns to his confused state. Roy encourages Fiz to go travelling and gives her some ideas of where to go. Ashley's barely speaking to Claire and continues to blame her for letting Matt get hold of Joshua. Claire's very upset and hurt. Danny persuades Mike that signing over power of attorney to him is the right thing to do. Mike's grateful to Danny trusting him implicitly. Maria suggests to Kirk he buys out her half of the kennels by getting a bank loan. She would then buy the Salon with her half of the money plus a loan. Fiz thinks he should sell his half too then they could go travelling. Kirk's not keen. Mike asks Rita how Len is and wonders if he'd like a drink. Rita's upset to see Mike in such a pitiful state. Claire pours her heart out to Bev about the row with Ashley and how he keeps comparing her to Maxine. Meanwhile Fred tries to make Ashley see sense. At the solicitor's Mike signs over power of attorney to Danny. Fiz is fed up as her hopes of seeing the world evaporate. Roy suggests she could go to night school instead. Fiz thinks she might do a course in kick-boxing. Mike has another bad turn and puts himself to bed. Danny feels guilty at using Mike's illness to his own advantage.

Frankie and Jamie look after Mike at No. 7. Mike's got a nasty cough. Leanne's pleased to have a day off from nursing Mike and refers to him as a human vegetable. Danny's furious and threatens to chuck her out. Norris studies the classified section in the Gazette. Rita wonders what he's up to. Danny tries to take Mike back to his flat but he refuses to leave No. 7. Vernon sets off for rehearsals leaving one of his drums behind. Liz takes the opportunity to drop in on him unannounced. She worries he's becoming over friendly towards Michelle the glamorous singer. Mike's cough has got worse and he's in a poor way. Frankie calls an ambulance. Danny's on the phone to a client when Sally runs in and tells him Mike's being taken off in an ambulance. Norris writes an ad for the lonely hearts column in the Gazette. He hides it from Rita. Danny, Frankie and Jamie go with Mike to the hospital. Penny arrives deeply worried about Mike. She's shocked to be told he's got pneumonia. Much to Kelly and Lloyd's embarrassment Becky tells them how much she loves them both. Jamie blames Danny for Mike's state of health - he wouldn't have spent the night in a park in the rain if he hadn't been trying to get away from Danny and Leanne.

Curly tries to convince the Taylor's his intentions are honourable and finds himself caught up in an engagement and Holdsworth suspects Curly of making Kim pregnant. Sally tells jenny the truth about the necklace, but Flick refuses to try and get the necklace back. Sally makes Mark buy the necklace for £35. Alec takes Bet's advice and closes the Rovers. The Relief manager Smedley is refused admittance by the Gilroy's and the rovers regulars climb over the back wall to be served. Nigel is thrown out of the Rovers by Bet and Deirdre and Emily fall out over the house sale.

Alma moves back to her flat. Marie and Jamie Ramsden arrive at No.5. Alma refuses to tell anyone about the split and resigns herself to a lonely Christmas. On the way to the WART dinner, the Roberts' car breaks down. Ivy is shocked when Marie goes out on the town for the night. Mrs Watts phones Brenda Taylor and tells her Curly and Kimberley are not spending Christmas with her. Kimberley breaks down. Kevin tows the Roberts to the dinner. Kimberley confesses to her parents. Curly is thrown out when the Taylors accuse him of seducing their "little girl". Sally goes into labour on her own. Don takes her and Liz to the hospital in his cab. Jack buys a dog, Boomer, from Bert Latham for Vera's Christmas present. Liz delivers the baby in the back of the cab on Rosamund Street.

Sally spends Christmas Day in hospital with her daughter, Rosie, weighing 7lbs 5oz. Curly spends the night in his car. Boomer eats the Duckworths' turkey and turns on them. They take refuge in their bedroom, but Curly tames Boomer,after the Duckworths have spent 3 hours upstairs. Marie is hung over and spends the morning in bed. She doesn't like Ivy making Jamie eat turkey and goes bac kto the flat and Gail goes into labour at Audrey's. Alec is annoyed at Jack's non-appearance at the Rovers. When he confronts him Boomer goes for him and chases him down the Street. Vera tells jack to get rid of the dog.

Mark takes on another mechanic. Curly is certain that Kim really loves him, but that dream is shattered when he discovers her in the arms of another man. Ken invites Alma to share a meal with him and the two have a pleasant evening together. Reg refuses to let the trolley draw take place until Rita is present. Reg pulls out Rita's ticket. Curly helps Rita run around the shop in 2 minutes grabbing what they can. Rita then donates all of the goods to a hospital, but later she realises that Reg fixed the draw. Kevin gets an offer of a job at Walkers' tyre and exhaust garage, while Vera spreads around the gossip that the draw was a fiddle.

Sally gets Kevin to see reason and accept her mother's offer of a loan. For £400, Des has bought a junk boat, which he installs in his back yard so he can work on restoring it. Mavis and Derek are not pleased at the new view with which Derek has provided them. When Jenny learns of the planned surprise party for her, she tells Angie to call it off because she has other plans. Angie, disgusted, finally tells Rita about Jenny's married boyfriend, Robert Weston. With the help of his friend Bert, Jack plans to revenge himself on the fox. Upset to hear of this, Mavis sends Derek out to lure the fox away, but Derek runs into Bert's huge dog in Jack's yard.

The fox-hunt fiasco becomes noisy, with a very drunken Bert and Jack urging Bert's dog, Boomer, on the trail of what they think is the fox, but is in fact Derek. Mavis sees the fox in her yard, and rushes out, banging on a saucepan to frighten it away. When Derek arrives home, Bert and Co. are not far behind, and when Bert tries to climb the fence, Mavis clocks him one with the saucepan. Next day, the Wiltons confess to Jack what had happened. Emily comes home from a hospital visit looking worried. Vera receives a phone call from her sister, and learns that their mother has died. Phil Jennings moves in as a lodger at the Rovers', but has not told Deirdre of this development.

Alf and Jim search for Don. They find a cap floating in the water. Don sobers up after falling in the river but is lost. Liz and Jim return and tell Ivy they've lost Don. She identifies the cap as his and grows hysterical, thinking Don has drowned. Don returns to find the police questioning Ivy about his disappearance.She is relieved to see him. Audrey is forced to stay with Gail and when she turns up at the shop to take money from the till, Ivy refuses to tell her where Alf has hidden the cash box. Alma agrees to let Audrey stay with her and she tells Alma that she intends to visit Grasmere Drive and raid Alf's hidden savings.Derek sulks as Des has moved the boat and refuses to talk to Mavis, but when Des buys Mavis a new sun lounger, Derek becomes even more furious when Mavis accepts it.

Reg looks forward to a lustful afternoon with Denise. Liz breaks down as she remembers Katie's birth and death. Des vists Lisa in Blackpool to her delight. Denise arranges to see Reg, Doug and Jack at her flat. Martin tells Gail that he wants Carmel to move out. Liz lays flowers on Katie's grave. Martin takes Carmel round a bedsit. She tells him that they can share it together and refuses to believe he doesn't love her. She tries to get him into bed but he fights her off. Denise lures Reg into her flat. He is horrified to find Doug there with Bet, Raquel and Vera. Jack is stunned to find everyone there when he arrives. Mike tells Alma that he wants Mark in his life. Gail is stunned when Martin packs Carmel's bags for her. He tells her that he can't cope anymore and he's sick of fending Carmel off. Carmel asks Martin if he's coming with her. Gail doesn't believe it as Carmel tells her that she loves Martin and he loves her. Carmel tells Gail she's too old for Martin. Gail throws her out of the house and breaks down. Martin tries to comfort her. Nicky is shocked at all the rowing. Des and Lisa find themselves drawn to each other, he tells her that he doesn't want to leave her and is going to get divorced as soon as he can. He tells her that he loves her and wants her to be with him all the time.

Jim apologises to Liz for putting her in an awkward position. Mike is suspicious about Steve liking his job so much - even though he's cut his wages and puts up with being pushed around. Reg warns Curly that he intends to go over his head to secure Maureen's job. Tanya asks Alma if she can rent the flat. Alma shows her round and agrees to take her on at £50 a week. Mark is keen to go on the school skiing trip to Austria. Liz tries to make Richard Willmore see that Jim is a changed man but he refuses to believe her. She resents the fact that he's dictating to her and refusing to let her make her own decisions. Joe tries to tell Sally how much he's missed her over Christmas but she refuses to listen. She tells him that she'll never leave Kevin and if she's to continue minding Jonathan he must accept that. Alf is proud to be asked to be the new Mayor of Weatherfield when the office is reinstated after a twenty-year gap but he declines as he's too busy with the shop. Audrey is disinterested until she realises that Alf would need a Mayoress. Reg tells Mrs Rogers that he will resign if Maureen is forced to leave. Jim is overcome when Liz tells him she's giving The Queens up. He promises that he'll make things up to her. She's upset as she loved being in charge. Tanya moves into the flat and rings someone telling them that it’s exactly what they’ve been looking for. Reg is devastated when Mrs Rogers accepts his resignation.

Alf is depressed on his last day at the shop. Jack thinks he has a winning certainty but no money to bet with. Whilst she lets the Electricity man into Tanya's flat, Alma noses around the place. Reg puts his flat on the market. He gets Kevin to trade his mini in for a van. Alma is puzzled as Tanya's flat doesn't look lived in and realises that she must be using it as a love nest. She worries she's on the game. Raquel is thrilled with Ben Cunningham's photographs. Jack sells the pot dog for £25. Vera passes the antique shop on Nightingale Street and sees it. Thinking it'll make a pair she buys it for £48. Jack is horrified when his horse falls. Vera is furious when she realises that she's bought her own dog back. He tries to run away but she hurls the dog at him and it smashes against a wall. Ivy is thrilled when Don moves back into her bed.

Liz has a job interview as Assistant Manager at a winebar but is turned down by the woman interviewer because she's female. Bernard is adamant he's giving up the Church because of his loss of faith. Emily supports him. Derek feels humiliated over the robbery. Mrs Jeffers is furious as £3,000 worth of equipment was taken and they are not insured when negligence is involved. She suspends Derek pending a governors' hearing and she will be recommending his dismissal. He is aghast. Alma is annoyed to discover that Mike hasn't paid Mark's school fees as he has a cash flow problem. When Ken has his hair cut, Denise and Fiona wager a bet on how old he is. The Bishop accepts Bernard's resignation and doesn't try to stop him. He is depressed that his life’s work seems to amount to nothing. Mike feels that Mark is so gifted he could get a scholarship. Denise and Fiona ask Ken what the first record he bought was to try and work out his age from the answer - he tells them it was a recording of the Enigma variations by the Hallé orchestra. Des gets jealous as Raquel goes on and on about wonderful Erik Mikaelson. Derek blames Mavis for turning him into a washed up old has-been.

Mavis accuses Derek of wallowing in self-pity. Emily and Bernard go on their walking holiday. He assures her that he has no intention of taking advantage of her. Percy cooks Maud dinner at No.3. Derek is surprised when Norris Cole turns up; the man who gave him a lift home from the motorway service station when he missed the coach from London. He explains he's taken Derek's advice, left his wife and has come to stay. Mavis is put out as he keeps calling Derek "Dirk". Denise cools towards Ken. Curly pays Jack £10 to babysit Jamie so he can take Tricia out. Mavis doesn't want to throw Norris out as he might do Derek's morale some good. Tanya packs for Amsterdam and is stunned when Alex cancels the trip as his wife needs him. Rita takes Sally on to work Sunday mornings at The Kabin for £20. Rita is touched when the Websters invite her for Sunday dinner. Derek tells Mavis that he's sure Norris will help him in his career. Ken invites Denise out but she turns him down. Carl Armstrong mistakes Jack for Tricia's new fella and thumps him.

Percy is stunned when Emily announces she is going to marry Bernard. He assures her that he'll make no fuss about moving out. Mavis tells Derek she doesn't want him to blow their savings on a new car. He sulks. Des is annoyed when Alex sends him a message telling him that he is sending Des to Newcastle for three weeks. Des worries that Alex has found out about his and Tanya's one-night stand. Tanya tells Des it was her idea - so they see less of each other. Curly panics when Carl Armstrong turns up at Bettabuy wanting to thump the manager; Andy says he's in London. Derek has a weary day trudging around town whilst Norris has a wonderful day. Norris insists Derek buys his car. When Maud runs herself down Percy tells her that she's a fine woman and says she'd make a man a wonderful wife; Maud mistakenly thinks he's proposed. Derek is put out when he learns Norris is going to buy a new car. Mavis points out that Norris is doing so well whilst Derek isn't. She's sick of sharing her house. Tricia is furious when Curly stands her up, saying he doesn't want to see her again. Reg is thrilled with the prospect of marrying Maud off and urges her to accept.

Mike is annoyed when Mark tells him he doesn't want him at his school open day. Kevin is fed up as his old car breaks down. Raquel returns from spending the weekend in Newcastle, having met Des' parents. Maud suggests Percy and Emily plan a double wedding to save money. Reg considers employing Maud and Percy in the shop as cheap labour. The Legion holds a raffle for the hospital and Liz pulls the winning ticket which is Jim's. He wins a day at the races for two. Bernard tells Emily that his mother was mentally ill for years. He tells her that he can't cope with living with that again. Rita gives the Websters her blessing to spend some of the money on a new car. Emily is heartbroken when Bernard tells her that he can't marry her. She refuses to scream and shout so he just leaves. A depressed Emily snaps at Percy but doesn't tell him about Bernard. Kevin buys a new car. Percy reads in the Gazette that a good age for budgies is twelve years. He feels this is wrong as Randy is eighteen. The Chief Executive runs through the Mayor ceremonial with the Roberts'. Audrey upsets Alf by being bored by the whole thing. Ken takes Denise to a barn dance at the school. She is flattered when he tells her that she makes him feel young. Denise is startled when Don arrives to taxi them. Emily tells Rita about Bernard's desertion and is comforted by her. Emily tells Rita that she loved Bernard. Denise is upset when Don turned up again to taxi them home. Back in the Street she marches off to her flat, puzzling Ken. Alf tells Audrey that he's sick of her showing him up. Andy is furious to find that Jack's pigeons have dirtied his shirt, left out to dry. The Duckworths refuse to compensate him. Mavis convinces herself that Derek has got another woman. She shares her fears with Rita. Des asks Tanya to finish with Alex but she demands that he finishes with Raquel first. Rita drives Mavis, following Derek when he goes out for the evening to keep his cancelled appointment. Tanya is disgusted with Alex when he can't bring himself to tell Val he's leaving. Mavis is horrified to see Derek call at a large house with a bouquet of flowers. Rita comforts her. Raquel feels sorry for Tanya having to share her man. Curly is outraged to find a pigeon has got into his observatory. He can't catch it so he calls in Jack who identifies it as Fergie. Mavis cracks when Derek gives her the flowers. She tells him that she knows he's been to see another woman as she followed him. Curly and Andy refuse to let Jack get to Fergie when he refuses to clean up after the bird. Derek confesses that he went to see Angela Hawthorne.
