Wen Ran agrees to take the Wolf operatives to see the instigator of today’s operation. The Crown Prince had hoped Guo Lishi would talk the Emperor out of handing over power to Lin Jiulang before the start of the imperial banquet. In the third year of the Tianbao Era, operatives of Wolf Squad disguise themselves as merchants amidst the hustle and bustle in the western district of Chang’an city on the eve of the Lantern Festival. The operatives are waiting for the right moment to strike. Li Bi, director of Peacekeeper Corps, is under orders to apprehend the Wolf operatives that have infiltrated Chang’an. This covert operation is foiled, allowing the squad leader Cao Poyan to slip away. Li Bi sends Tan Qi to the jail to bring the convict Zhang Xiaojing, who is sentenced to death, to be tasked with continuing the investigation.

Li Bi tells Zhang Xiaojing that while he cannot lift the death sentence, he can allow him to work as a mercenary lieutenant for one more day. Zhang Xiaojing and others are in a formidable battle with the Yourao Regiment. General Gan Shoucheng of the Yourao Regiment zeros in on the three of them with strong forces and successfully captures them. Tan Qi puts aside her dignity and dances as a slave girl for the pleasure of Gan Shoucheng in order to buy time for Zhang Xiaojing and Yao Runeng. Li Bi pretends to be dead to escape capture. He then asks Guo Lishi for urgent assistance. Guo Shili risks making himself an enemy of the Yourao Regiment to try and save Zhang Xiaojing, Tan Qi and Yao Runeng, and finally succeeds in rescuing them.

The copyist Zhu Ci from the Ministry of Revenue and his wife and son Zhu Xuan bring relief goods to the residents of a slum in Pingkang district. Zhu Xuan see the Emperor lying battered and injured by the road, beaten by a low-ranking bureaucrat. Wen Ran tells Zhang Xiaojing that everything she has been doing is to help him escape from prison. She hopes he will stop the investigation. He challenges the operatives, one of whom, Mageer, turns the tables by threatening to kill Wang Yunxiu, leading to Zhang Xiaojing being captured instead. Guo Lishi delivers an oral edict from the Emperor ordering Peacekeeper Corps to close the investigation. The edict states that all personnel in the Agency are deemed to have achieved sufficient merits to be safe from any disciplinary sanctions. They shall return to the original posts from which they were seconded. Zhang Xiaojing is to be sent back to death row. Li Bi secretly orders Tan Qi to release Zhang Xiaojing to undertake further covert investigations. However, having been deceived and misguided by Yao Runeng, Cui Qi leads the Lyuben Regiment to defect to the Yourao Regiment, taking Zhang Xiaojing with them.

Long Bo tells the Emperor in great detail of the many interesting stories between him and Wen Wuji, as well as how Wen Wuji risked his own life to save him on the battlefield. He Zhizheng steps forward to get the Crown Prince out of a jam by revealing that the land on which an embassy was built was forcibly acquired from its rightful owner. In a flashback, Wen Wuji meets with Blaze Gang but the negotiations break down and Wen Wuji is killed.

Tan Qi does as Zhang Xiaojing tells her, to hint that Prince Yong should make Blaze Gang release the girl they abducted. Prince Yong directs Feng Dalun to go and apprehend Zhang Xiaojing. Zhang Xiaojing follows a lead that takes him to a quiet area in Changming district.

Zhang Xiaojing wants to invite Ge Lao, who oversees all illegal trade in Chang’an, to assist with the investigation. Ge Lao demands that Zhang Xiaojing hands over the mole. Zhang Xiaojing sells out Xiao Yi, for which he loses the support of all mercenaries in Chang’an. Ge Lao discloses the fact that a prostitute called Tong’er is the issuer of the VIP pass, and he happens to hold her imprisoned. Tong’er tells Zhang Xiaojing that she would only disclose Long Bo’s hideout if Ge Lao is prepared to free her and her lover. Ge Lao refuses to set them free.

Zhang Xiaojing breaks into Puzhe’s room and catches a glimpse of the fleeing assassin. He gives chase, and is followed by Yisi. The assassin is not alone, he and his accomplice create a commotion and flee amidst the chaos. At the suggestion of Tan Qi, they make an announcement that Puzhe is still alive and is being sent to the clinic for treatment. The assassin impersonates a medic and comes to the clinic to intercept Puzhe, only to be captured by Zhang Xiaojing. Yu Chang comes to the Nestorian Church to silence them by making an attempt on their lives.

The Crown Prince and Lin Jiulang enter into a heated exchange, both trying to assign blame to each other. Li Bi is only interested in finding out who the mastermind is. The Emperor forces He Zhizheng to pass judgement on whether the Crown Prince is an innocent person facing false accusations.

With the help of surveillance conducted at watchtowers set up by Peacekeeper Corps, Zhang Xiaojing enters into intense close combat with the enemy, finally eliminating a Wolf operative and a horse carriage. Li Bi tries to dispatch soldiers to help Zhang Xiaojing in pursuing Wolf Squad, and clears the crowd from roads near Peacekeeper Corps headquarters. He prepares to act as bait to lure the enemy in. Zhang Xiaojing finally subdues Mageer and crashes the horse carriage with the explosives into a lake.
#25 - Sun at the West
Season 1 - Episode 10 - Aired 6/27/2019
Zhang Xiaojing drives a wedge between Wolf Squad and Blaze Gang, which leads to a melee between the two camps and buys Zhang Xiaojing enough time until Cui Qi and his Lyuben Regiment support arrives. The melee ends with Blaze Gang fleeing and most of the 50 operatives of Wolf Squad killed. Zhang Xiaojing is wounded and unconscious while Wen Ran is taken away by Mageer and squad leader Cao Poyan, who had slipped away from the melee. Earlier, Cui Qi lies that Wolf Squad has been completed eliminated, in order to spare the Lyuben Regiment from any disciplinary sanctions.
