#2 - Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

With about 1.7 million inhabitants, Ulaanbaatar is perhaps the little brother in Reizen Waes: world cities, but the city deserves a place in Tom's list for various reasons. Not only do more than half of the Mongolian population live in the capital Ulaanbaatar, the number of new residents is also increasing. It makes Ulaanbaatar a real metropolis in the most sparsely populated country in the world. The traditional, romantic image of Mongolia as a country of only vast steppes seems to be in need of revision. Time for Tom to find out what's going on here.

#3 - London, United Kingdom

Season 8 - Episode 2 - Aired 4/10/2022

With over 9 million inhabitants, the metropolis of London is not only the largest city in Western Europe, it is also still a huge attraction for people from all over the world. It makes London one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The ideal playground for Tom, who is looking for the different faces of this city. For example, he ends up on an 'English Manners' course and with the biggest fan of the British royals. Tom also has a unique evening in the Jamaican neighborhood of Brixton and at bare knuckle boxers in East London.

#4 - Cairo, Egypt

Season 8 - Episode 1 - Aired 4/3/2022

In the past two years Tom traveled mainly through Flanders and the Netherlands, but how different it is this season. He investigates what it is like to live in one of the largest cities in Africa and by far the largest city in Egypt, which was an important metropolis already in the time of the ancient Egyptians. That's Cairo still.. Cairo's population continues to grow at a killer pace. This could cause problems in the long run, because in recent years the Egyptian capital - with more than 22 million inhabitants - is in danger of bursting at the seams. A 'new Cairo', 45 kilometers from the current city, is therefore in the making.

Op Texel bezoekt Tom Waes schapenboer Jan-Willem Bakker, gaat hij parachutespringen onder begeleiding van levende legende Jan Boyen Rienks en vogels spotten op de Big Day. Op Vlieland bewaakt Tom samen met het Nederlandse leger Cornfield Range, waar verschillende landen bommen leren droppen en schietoefeningen doen. En Tom maakt één van zijn dromen waar: hij overnacht op een drooggevallen schip op de Wadden. Op Terschelling krijgt hij een rondleiding van zijn goede vriend Frank Lammers. Tot slot leert hij op Schiermonnikoog sliksleeën, de ideale manier om zijn trip door Nederland te eindigen.

#6 - The rural East

Tom Waes trekt door het landelijke Oosten en begint in de Achterhoek. Hij raakt onmiddellijk gecharmeerd door de trots van de inwoners op hun mooie regio. Op klompen rijdt Tom dieper het Oosten in. Hij gaat waterskiën met boerenzonen Luuk en Thijs, bewondert Ampies Berg in 't Harde en geeft een bijzondere bijdrage aan de universiteit van Wageningen. In Bovensmilde raakt Tom in gesprek met Molukkers Abé, Jacco en Mietji. Abé en Jacco waren enkele van de kapers van de trein bij Wijster in 1975. Normaal mijden ze de media maar Tom wordt openlijk onthaald met een bord papeda, een typisch Moluks gerecht.

#7 - North & South Holland

Tom Waes duikt in Noord- en Zuid-Holland. Hij bezoekt op zijn manier enkele toeristische trekpleisters. Hij crosst met de wereldkampioenen powerboat naar de Kinderdijk molens en vaart op een originele boot uit Lampedusa door de Amsterdamse grachten. Tom geniet van het Westerlicht en hij gaat op BN-safari in 't Gooi, waar hij bij Linda de Mol aanbelt. In Haarlem verrast hij Hannie, een grote fan die een dikke knuffel nodig heeft. En Tom verrast zijn crew, hij wil met hen in traditionele klederdracht op de oerklassieke foto in Volendam.

Los Angeles, or L.A. for short, is the second largest city in the United States and the American attraction for dreamers of all kinds. A city where everything is possible and everything should be possible. In neighborhoods like Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach or Downtown L.A. you can meet the strangest characters and have adventures. But the American Dream also has its downside. Tom discovers this in poorer neighborhoods like Compton, where you will not encounter a white tourist. And just outside the city, in the Californian desert, Waes also meets a lot of people who have just fled city life and lead a completely different life, far away from the bustle of L.A.

The final leg of his journey takes Tom back to the capital, Kyiv. There, Tom witnesses how the residents of Kyiv are struggling against the bitter cold in the winter of 2026. Among other things, he visits one of the city’s many food distribution sites and stops by an apartment building where residents have been without electricity and heat for weeks. Together with his Ukrainian guide, Volodymyr, Tom concludes his return to Ukraine in Bucha, a small town that was nearly wiped off the map by the Russians four years ago. In 2026, Bucha has become one of the defining symbols of Ukrainian resilience.

From Lviv, Tom continues his journey through the Ukrainian countryside toward the capital, Kyiv. Along the way, he meets a unique ice hockey team and is invited to visit a woman named Olga, known as a “baboejska.” This encounter brings back many memories of Tom’s previous trip to Ukraine. The further their journey takes them, the more Tom and his team feel the impact of the terrible war in Ukraine.
