Match of the Day (often abbreviated as MOTD) is the BBC's main football television programme. Typically, it is shown on BBC One on Saturday evenings during the English football season, showing highlights of the day's matches in the Barclays Premier League. It is one of the BBC's longest-running shows, having been on air since 1964, though it has not always been aired regularly. The 'Match of the Day' brand is also often used for live football coverage on the BBC. They run a competition called Goal of the Month, choosing the best goal each month, where the winner from there will then be entered into a goal of the season award.

Reigning champions Manchester City host Tottenham in the lunchtime kick-off at the Etihad Stadium. Last season City were 5-0 up after 55 minutes and went on to win 6-0, with two goals apiece from Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero. There's a London derby at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace entertain Chelsea in a match which proved crucial to both team's fortunes last season. Relegation-threatened Palace won 1-0 after an own goal from John Terry, denting the title hopes of Jose Mourinho's side. Chelsea's London derby against Tottenham is the pick of Wednesday's games as Spurs look to make amends for the 4-0 defeat they suffered at Stamford Bridge last season. Villa boss Tim Sherwood spent five months in charge of Spurs last season, but left last summer when the club instead opted to recruit Mauricio Pochettino. The Englishman returned to management with relegation-threatened Villa in February, and will be eager to prove a point to his former employers. Also battling for survival are Burnley, who face Tottenham's north London rivals Arsenal. The Gunners are hoping to end the campaign by securing Champions League qualification for the 18th successive season, but cannot afford a slip-up at Turf Moor. City were utterly dominant against the Hammers last season, winning all four of their encounters. They easily won both league matches and also enjoyed a record breaking 9-0 aggregate victory in the League Cup semi-finals. Elsewhere, Liverpool host Hull City at Anfield. The Tigers have never won a match away at the Reds and have let in 30 goals in nine previous visits. But they have a decent record against them in the Premier League, having only lost one of their last three encounters. In the other matches Southampton entertain Stoke, Arsenal travel to Sunderland, West Brom play Crystal Palace and Swansea take on Leicester in the evening kick-off.

There's a west London derby at Stamford Bridge, where title hopefuls Chelsea take on promoted side Queens Park Rangers. The Hoops won their last game away to the Blues in January 2013, but that is their only top-flight victory there since 1979. The Baggies came agonisingly close to a victory at Stamford Bridge last November, only to be denied by a controversial Eden Hazard penalty in stoppage time as the game ended 2-2. Dan Walker presents highlights of the day's two FA Cup quarter-finals. Giant killers Bradford City take on Reading, looking to keep their excellent recent cup tradition going. The 2013 League Cup finalists are enjoying a majestic FA Cup run this season, having already knocked out Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and Sunderland at home in the last round. Reading's Cup has seen them drawn away in every round. Steve Clarke's side have won at Championship rivals Huddersfield, Cardiff and Derby to reach the last eight. The day's other quarter-final sees Aston Villa host West Bromwich Albion in an eagerly awaited West Midlands derby. The claret and blue colours of Villa have adorned the famous old trophy seven times, the last of which came 58 years ago in 1957. West Brom were last winners of the Cup in 1968.
