The story follows Nanami, a girl who finds herself homeless after her father leaves. Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she's just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwittingly taken over his job as a local deity! Nanami has all kinda of new responsibilities she doesn't understand, dangers she's unaware of, and a cranky ex-familiar who's... actually pretty hot. What's a new-fledged godling to do?

Nanami and her familiars Tomoe and Mizuki have survived many challenges since Nanami took on the mantle of patron god of the Mikage Shrine. One day, the wind god Otohiko comes to invite Nanami to the Divine Assembly in Izumo, the home of the gods, and Nanami decides to take Mizuki with her, leaving Tomoe to impersonate her at school. However, she has an ulterior motive for attending the Divine Assembly: to discover the whereabouts of the missing Lord Mikage, the former god of the shrine. After her adventures in Izumo, Nanami meets Botanmaru, a Tengu child who is looking for someone she knows very well: Shinjirou. Botanmaru needs Shinjirou, their prince, to return home to Mount Kurama and stop the tyranny of Jirou, who has taken over her hometown. As a young goddess getting used to divinity, Nanami has to deal with a tengu rebellion, her blossoming feelings for Tomoe and a strange man with links to Tomoe's past and Nanami's future.
