He is considered one of the most dazzling monarchs of modern times: Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony, known as “August the Strong” (1670–1733). His regal self-presentation was comparable only to that of one other European monarch: Louis XIV. August’s court was meant to be in no way inferior to that of the French Sun King.
