The man gives Burnside the name of the man who gave them to him and Conway pulls the men off the job before they can blow aCustoms and Excise operation.

When the bodies of recent murder victims are dug up with ancient remains in the grounds of a ruined Abbey, Tony and Carol uncover more local legend than fact. But will that lead them to the killer? When bodies are discovered at Norton Hotel during the digging of new foundations, Carol is sent in to oversee whether they were in any way suspicious, or a legacy of the hotel's previous incarnation as part of the local Abbey. But the discovery of the bodies coincides with the hotel being burned to the ground, and Carol realises that she's got a very current case on her hands. She calls Tony in when it becomes apparent that someone is killing people in a way that Norton hasn't seen since it burned witches back in the middle ages. Needless to say, Brandon isn't too chuffed to have nothing to brief the press with apart from Tony's theory that the same killer could somehow be reaching a long arm over five centuries of murder. Tony and Carol are forced to challenge all that they thought they knew, as it is a case rich in the inexplicable. This killer forces them to test not only their science and experience, but also their very beliefs.

Conway talks to the relief about image. ""Efficient service with a smile"". Martella is asked to do surgery that afternoon. Booze has been found in the locker room. Conway is on the war path. Edwards goes for counseling. Taffy thinks it will be a one-off but the counselor thinks different. The counselor thinks he made headway until Taffy makes a comment about wasting time. Taffy sends his wife to Wales to look for a house for them. Able on a bike catches a lady getting out of a car used in a wages snatch. Stamp is not happy he has to transport the dog handler around.

The suspect tries to do a deal with the D.I. about getting bail to attend his brother's wedding. Regional Crime Squad:Drugs are in the station and organising a raid on the factory. Meadows gets upset because of a missing witness and Meadows wants the D.I. to go and talk to the witness. The D.I. wants to be in on the drug raid. Haines talks to the very scared witness. Haines is head hunted back to the drug squad. Meadows is not happy when told by Brownlow.

Sgt Boyden and Polly are on patrol and discuss Reg's plans for a parachute jump. Polly takes a visit to a tower block where a domestic has been reported. There doesn't appear to be anyone in although the tv is still on. A body is noticed under the balcony and on checking they discover she jumped with her baby. Inspector Monroe comes down and talks to the man who reported the disturbance. Meadows and Carver also come down. Boyden finds a man sitting by the side of the road, who turns out to be the baby's father. When interviewed he has problems answering the questions. He came down from Scotland to try to be a family.

Burnside is talking to a snout about a delivery going through couriers. Tosh temporarily breaks the chain. The contents of the bag are guns not drugs as Burnside thought.

Loxton and Ackland argue about height requirements. They are called to an RTA where a pregnant woman was involved in a hit-and run at a crossing. She later loses her baby. The driver comes in to report the accident after he has sobered up. Brownlow is back from a conference and wants to interview all the female officers in the station.

A couple of kids in a stolen Jaguar are causing all sorts of trouble and accidents throughout Sun Hill. PC Tony Stamp and PC Reg Hollis pursue in the Area Car, but all police efforts to stop the car fail. The kids seem to always be one step ahead of the police, until Stamp realises they must have a police radio or scanner. Changing frequencies, they force the Jag into an abandoned bottling plant, where the driver, Rob Orme, has vowed to 'teach the police a lesson' after his father has been sentenced to twelve years in prison. Climbing to the roof of the building, Rob taunts Stamp and Ch. Insp. Derek Conway as they try to talk him down, but accidentally slips and falls to his death.

Ch. Supt. Brownlow organises a tea dance for the Met Police Pensioners & Widows society. PCs Jarvis and Quinnan spend the afternoon dancing with admiring elderly ladies, WPC Polly Page is harrassed by a wheelchair-bound admirer, and PC Reg Hollis does a magic show. Brownlow is dreading the arrival of Geoffrey Allerton, an ex-copper who goes out of his way to complain about everything. When the minivan misses Allerton, Brownlow asks PC Tony Stamp to pick him up on the way to the bakery to pick up some cakes. When Stamp steps out of the bakery, he is horrified to find Brownlow's car has been stolen whilst Allerton was buying some tobacco. Packing Allerton and the cakes onto a bus, a desperate Stamp tries to retrieve Brownlow's car after it is impounded. When Allerton arrives at the dance at last, he causes a fuss when he recognises an armed blagger from a fifteen year old case at the wedding next door.

DS John Boulton is determined to catch a pair of brutal thieves, and he is certain that local crook Mick Glover is one of them. Ignoring protests from Uniform, who already have Glover under surveillance, Boulton leads a disasterous raid on Glover's flat, which puts PCs Quinnan and Garfield's informant Janie in grave danger. When Quinnan and Garfield find Janie's flat on the Jasmine Allen estate vandalised, Quinnan pursues the suspects, but finds himself seperated from Garfield, who can only watch in horror as his friend is beaten and stabbed by a gang of youths.
