Emma - Season 1 - Episode 2
Emma continues her attempts to marry off Harriet and Mr Elton, vicar of Highbury. Although uninterested in marriage herself, she is intrigued by the mysterious and elusive Frank Churchill, who she hopes to meet for the first time at a village Christmas party. Frank does not arrive, and instead Emma becomes the subject of unwanted and embarrassing attention from Mr Elton. A few weeks later, village gossip and speculation focuses on the arrival of young Jane Fairfax and a large piano she has been sent by a mystery admirer. Emma refuses to believe that Mr Knightley could be the secret admirer. He couldn't be, could he?

Jane Eyre (2006) - Season 1 - Episode 2
Jane braves the flames and wakes Rochester. He runs off to the North Tower, leaving Jane watching. They embrace on his return. In the morning Rochester has disappeared. Finally he returns, but with a houseful of guests, including the beautiful Blanche and her mother, Lady Ingram. The servants are sure that Rochester is to marry Blanche. Jane is visibly hurt by this news, and Rochester seems to be rubbing it in by insisting that she joins them for their evening soirees. Once again Jane hears disturbing noises and this time Rochester asks for her help looking after Mason, who has been violently attacked. Rochester is also injured, and leaves Jane whilst he calls for the doctor. The noises behind the door to the North Tower are most frightening.

Emma - Season 1 - Episode 3
Emma teases Mr Knightley about Jane, but he remains tight-lipped. Meanwhile, Frank and Emma plan a ball, and Emma wonders whether she might be in love with him. Despite having a wonderful time at a village ball, she decides not. With her matchmaking officially abandoned, Emma feels cooped up and bored, so Mr Knightley suggests a day trip to Box Hill for a change of scene and some temporary escape. He also tells Emma that he suspects Frank and Jane to be secretly in love. Emma rebuffs the suggestion - she can personally vouch for Frank's indifference to Jane - which leaves Knightley feeling hurt at Emma's indifference towards him.

Jane Eyre (2006) - Season 1 - Episode 4
Jane leaves Thornfield Hall, heartbroken and penniless. She lays down on the moors to await her fate, no longer wishing to live. She is found by St John Rivers, a local clergyman. He and his two sisters care for Jane and she sets to work as the parish teacher. She also works hard at repressing her feelings for Rochester. St John does some research into her background and finds that she has an inheritance. He also discovers her relationship with Rochester. He proposes that they get married and become missionaries. But Jane feels Rochester calling her, and has to return to Thornfield. There everything has changed, and she finds her future.

Jane Eyre (2006) - Season 1 - Episode 3
Mrs Reed, Jane's aunt requests Jane to return to see her as she is dying. Once there Jane discovers that an unknown uncle had offered to look after her, but she forgives her aunt. After the funeral she returns to Thornfield Hall. There staff still expect the wedding to take place between Blanche and Rochester. Rochester and Jane go for a walk and finally she admits that she cares for him. He also loves her and proposes marriage. Two days before the wedding, Jane has a terrible nightmare and is sure that someone has been in her room. Rochester says it was a dream, but her veil had been torn in two. At the wedding itself a lawyer arrives to declare that Rochester is already married. Her name is Bertha, and it is she who resides in the North Tower.

Our Mutual Friend - Season 1 - Episode 1
A body pulled from the Thames is identified as young John Harmon, heir to a fortune made in dust-contracting (a lucrative 19th century recycling business). Bella Wilfer, his wife-to-be by terms of old Harmon's will, goes into mourning though she has never met her fiancé. Bella is adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Boffin, inheritors of the dust business in default of young Harmon. The Boffins also hire a very capable but mysterious young man as secretary, John Rokesmith, whose keen interest in Bella holds the secret to his true identity.

Emma - Season 1 - Episode 4
What was intended as a day of fun turns into a day of agony for everyone on the Box Hill excursion. Things come to a head when, egged on by Frank, Emma behaves very badly, insulting Miss Bates. She is berated by Knightley, and realises that her behaviour was shameful. She tries to repair things with Jane and Miss Bates, but Jane will not see her - although Miss Bates tells her that Jane has accepted a job as a governess, and cried all night. Meanwhile, Knightley goes to stay with his brother in London, and will be away for a while. When Frank's controlling aunt dies, the Westons expect him to propose to Emma - but his actions set in motion a chain of events that both shock Emma and make her realise something that has been in plain sight all along...

Rich, independent and kind-spirited, Emma Woodhouse has no need to marry, but nothing delights her more than matchmaking those around her. Once she has married off her close companions, she alights upon the pretty Harriet Smith to fashion into her new playmate and ally. She persuades Harriet that she is too good for her suitor, the farmer Robert Martin, and encourages her to set her sights higher. But close family friend Mr Knightley warns Emma that her meddling will cause great pain - to both Robert and Harriet. Emma refuses to listen, and Mr Knightley is furious at Emma's stubbornness.

Lizzie Hexam, daughter of the corpse robber who found young Harmon's alleged body, is being courted by two desperate characters: Eugene Wrayburn, a dissolute barrister, and Bradley Headstone, a mentally-deranged schoolmaster. As their rivalry gets out of hand, Lizzie flees. Meanwhile, the once-kindly Mr. Boffin has become a tyrant to Rokesmith, who evokes the sympathy of the formerly haughty Bella.

Jane Eyre, an orphan, is first raised in the household of her Aunt Mrs Reed. She is then sent to Lowood school, where she remains until she is 19. She is then appointed governess at Thornfield Hall by the absent owner Edward Rochester. One day she is out walking when she has a narrow miss with a horse, which throws its rider. She later discovers that he was her employer. Thornfield Hall has a secret and it seems that Grace Poole, the laundrywoman has a constant eye on Jane. One night disturbed by a strange laugh, Jane follows a noise to Mr Rochester's room. Here she finds his bed drapes in flames, and him in grave danger.
