Arsene Wenger's men have won their last seven games against Newcastle, and will be hopeful of extending that winning run at St James' Park. Elsewhere, reigning champions Chelsea face fellow Londoners Crystal Palace, while Aston Villa meet Sunderland, Bournemouth host Leicester and West Ham travel to Liverpool. Arsenal have approached the new season in confident mood after ending the last campaign strongly and retaining the FA Cup. Sunday's opponents West Ham hadn't beaten the Gunners in 15 attempts, but their new manager Slaven Bilic has been backed in the transfer market and set a target of a top-eight finish by the club's owners. There was a managerial bow too for Steve McClaren at Newcastle, who hosted Southampton, while Stoke City faced Liverpool in a repeat of the final day of last season, when the Potters scored five first-half goals as Brendan Rodgers' side were thrashed 6-1.

Champions Chelsea are unbeaten in the Premier League against last season's runners-up Manchester City since Jose Mourinho returned to the west London club. Mourinho will be looking to extend that run to five games, and with it steal an early march in the fledgling title race. Crystal Palace invested heavily in new signings over the summer, including one-time Arsenal target Yohan Cabaye. The Eagles' new arrivals are sure of a warm reception from the Selhurst Park faithful ahead of their home league debuts as Arsene Wenger's Gunners make the short trip across London.

Gary Lineker introduces highlights from the Premier League's opening weekend, including Watford v Liverpool, Chelsea v Burnley, Everton v Stoke, Crystal Palace v Huddersfield, Southampton v Swansea, West Brom v Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion v Manchester City, as well as Friday night's curtain-raiser between Arsenal and Leicester. Jurgen Klopp will be expecting his Liverpool side to make a winning start as they travel to Watford in Saturday's early game. The Reds won at Vicarage Road last season thanks to a stunning overhead kick by Emre Can, which was voted Match of the Day's Goal of the Season. Champions Chelsea will be looking for a repeat of last season's 3-0 home win over Burnley, while Brighton & Hove Albion face a tough start to life in the Premier League as they take on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Everton welcome Manchester City to Goodison Park, meaning an early return to Merseyside for Raheem Sterling, whose controversial move from Liverpool to Man City has been one of the talking points of the summer. In Sunday's other match, Premier League new boys Watford host Southampton at Vicarage Road.

The Blues are fighting for a Champions League place, and Fulham have shone at times this season as Martin Jol puts his own unique stamp on the Cottagers. Last time they met, they drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Elsewhere, David Moyes's Everton hosted Martin O'Neill's Sunderland - a meeting of two of the wiliest managers in the league - while Norwich tried to stop Harry Redknapp's entertaining Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Both title-chasing clubs were in action, with Manchester City hosting West Brom and arch rivals Manchester United making the short trip to Wigan. Roberto Mancini's City appeared to be under the most pressure, having let the defending champions reel them in as they chase a first league championship in 44 years. The Sky Blues hope the full return of Carlos Tevez will trigger a defining winning streak. Wigan were desperate to halt the charge of Sir Alex Ferguson's players, as the Latics battle desperately against the drop, while other relegation-threatened teams were in action with Wolves taking on Arsenal and QPR playing host to Swansea. Other highlights include Liverpool's trip to Blackburn.

Liverpool's season has been undermined by a lack of goals, and all eyes will be on struggling 35m pound striker Andy Carroll as he returns to his former club for the first time since his British record transfer. Champions League-chasing Tottenham play host to a Swansea side which has exceeded expectation since promotion to the Premier League. The two sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture but Swansea go into this game seeking their first ever league victory at White Hart Lane.
