The home side can call upon some incredible attacking talent, with likes of Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri and David Silva all competing for places in Roberto Mancini's starting line-up. Everton boss David Moyes has to work on a strictly limited budget, but the Toffees are always difficult opponents, as they demonstrated with a 2-1 victory at City last season. Elsewhere, newly-promoted Swansea head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, while Liverpool host Wolves and Stoke take on Manchester United. West Brom boss Roy Hodgson leads his side out against former club Fulham, while Newcastle meet Blackburn and Wigan host Tottenham.

Gary Lineker introduces highlights of Saturday's six Barclays Premier League fixtures. Arsenal's first home game of the season was against old adversaries Liverpool. Contests between the two sides have been close in recent seasons with five of the last eight matches ending 1-1, including both games last term. Could either team find a winner this time around? A much-changed Sunderland side faced local rivals Newcastle at the Stadium of Light hoping to improve on a poor home Premier League record against the Magpies. The Black Cats have won only one of eight previous contents. Swansea's first top flight home game in 28 years was against Wigan, managed by their former boss Roberto Martinez.

Gary Lineker returns with highlights and goals from the opening day of the 2011/12 Premier League season in Saturday's Match of the Day. Liverpool spent heavily during the summer, and their new signings will be eager to impress against Sunderland, particularly Jordan Henderson, who could make his Reds debut against the club he left just two months ago. Fellow midfielder Stewart Downing, who joined from Aston Villa, could also play his first competitive game for Kenny Dalglish's side. Arsenal take on Newcastle at St James' Park, scene of the Gunners' incredible collapse last season, when they surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4. QPR return to the top flight after a 15-year absence, with Bolton providing the opposition at Loftus Road, while fellow newboys Norwich visit Wigan. Martin Jol's first Premier League match as Fulham boss is against an Aston Villa side also under new management, with Alex McLeish taking over at Villa Park this summer. Elsewhere, Blackburn host Wolves.

Chelsea have beaten Norwich 4-0 in their last two encounters at Stamford Bridge, although the Canaries lead their illustrious opponents by four wins to three in Premier League meetings. Wolves claimed their first win against neighbours Aston Villa for 31 years in March. Matt Jarvis scored the only goal to help keep Mick McCarthy's side in the top flight at the expense of a Birmingham side managed by Alex McLeish, now in charge at Villa. The 185th Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton took place at Anfield, with the visitors looking for their first win at the home of their old adversaries since September 1999. The Toffees' last success at Anfield was a 1-0 win, as Kevin Campbell slotted the winner in a feisty affair that saw three men red carded. Elsewhere, Manchester United hosted Norwich City, a side they have only dropped two points against from a possible 24 during the Premier League era. West Brom travelled to Sunderland looking for a repeat of their 3-2 comeback victory last April, and Manchester City visited Ewood Park, a happy hunting ground for them in recent seasons with back-to-back wins.

Champions Manchester United were at Bolton, whom they twice trailed in the corresponding fixture last year, while neighbours City hosted Wigan. Premier League newcomers Swansea travelled up the M4 to face Arsenal, while new Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas took the Blues on a long journey north to meet Sunderland. Everton v Aston Villa is the most-played fixture in the top flight, and the two met again today at Goodison Park. The remaining matches saw Wolves host Tottenham and Liverpool visit Stoke.

Big-spending Manchester City hosted Aston Villa, who had not won a Premier League game at Eastlands since April 2007. Mario Balotelli scored a hat-trick for Roberto Mancini's side in a 4-0 home win in this fixture in 2010. Everton travelled to Chelsea, where David Moyes' side had secured five draws in their last five Premier League visits. Other games saw promoted clubs Norwich and Swansea in action at Carrow Road, Blackburn away at QPR, Stoke host Fulham, and Wigan and Bolton meet in a north-west derby.

However, the Gunners have made their worst start to a season in more than half a century, while Chelsea have made a smooth transition under new manager Andre Villas Boas. The key man in this fixture could be Didier Drogba, who has scored 13 goals in his last 12 appearances against Arsenal. Another forward, Wayne Rooney of Manchester United, is likely to be the focus of attention on his return to previous club Everton. But the title-chasing Blues, inspired by Spanish forward David Silva and Belgian captain Vincent Kompany, look ominous in both defence and attack as they look to win a first Championship since 1968. Resurgent Newcastle are primed to provide a stern test of their credentials. Fired-up Manchester United go to Swansea's Liberty Stadium, still keen to prove they are over a humiliating 6-1 defeat at home to title rivals Manchester City in October. They last played away against the Swans in 1983, when the clubs played out a 0-0 draw at the romantic old Vetch Field ground.
