DI Jane Edmonds from SCG arrives to investigate the scam. She flirts with Boyden - the two clearly have a previous history together - which stirs up the jealousy of Vicky Hagen. When Billy is hit by a car, he is abducted from St Hughs hospital by Kate and their stepfather Tom Adams, who is behind the blackmail and whom Kate is besotted with. Edmonds is all for arresting Adams when they use one of the previous victims in a sting operation, but Boyden risks letting him go so he will lead them to the missing kids.

After a minor car accident in the High Street, Carver breathalyses an elderly man, but takes sympathy on him and allows him to leave in a taxi. The man turns out to be Hugh Alexander, a High Court judge with a renowned pro-police stance, and Carver finds himself suspected of showing bias, particularly when the other man involved in the accident threatens legal action against the Met. At the trial of a man accused of murdering a police officer, Worrell feels marginalised as a black officer when she is asked to testify and be a character witness for the dead officer. Conway meets with Gary Fablon, and discovers that Fablon is addicted to litigation, and the accident was his fault.

Despite the discovery of the Saab car used in the murder, progress on the case is slow. The owner is identified as Paul King but when the police break into his flat they find King dead from a gunshot wound. Neighbours remember that a blonde woman was a frequent visitor. Trawling through statements after the TV appeal, DC Danny Glaze notices the name Kathy Milligan. Meanwhile PC Des Taviner is annoyed that CID will not share information on the case with Uniform and decides to do a little detection of his own. He has a hunch that petty thief Derek Smith, who witnessed the murder, knows more than he's letting on. Taviner, PCs Nick Klein and Reg Hollis pump him for information until he reveals that the manager of a local night club, Arty Shanks, was selling a Saab for silly money. Back at Sun Hill Sergeant Craig Gilmore wants to tell CID but Taviner is reluctant and pays Arty a visit. At last there is a breakthrough when, as Glaze researches Milligan on the station computer, Arty names King as Milligan's pimp.

An assault on a prison officer may not be the straightforward mugging it appears to be. PC Jim Carver moves in with the Sharpes as their Family Liaison Officer, hoping to glean some vital information on Joanna's disappearance. PC Kerry Young suspects her husband is having an affair, and notices something going on when Ashton visits his sergeant in hospital after Gilmore is attacked while guarding a witness. PC Des Taviner ignores what could be an important clue in the Joanna Sharpe investigation, as he thinks it comes from an unreliable source. When the police get word there may be a paedophile ring operating in Sun Hill, they are determined to keep this news from Joanna's distraught parents.

The investigation into the attack on Tanya Fisher continues, with DS Debbie McAllister and DI Will Elvins from MIT having strong suspicions about her ex-husband, TDC Brandon Kane. As PC Cathy Bradford prepares to flee the country, she receives a phone call from PC Polly Page telling her about Kane's questioning. As suspicion begins to fall on her, Bradford arrives at the station and taking a leaf out of DS McAllister's book, tells the investigators that Brandon couldn't have attacked Tanya - he was beating her up at the time, and she is pregnant with his baby.

PC Gemma Osbourne arrests a minor celebrity, Channel London weathergirl Sandie Booth, for shoplifting. While being charged in Custody, Booth overhears a reference to Gemma's sexuality, and it's not long before she's concocted an accusation of indecent assault by Osbourne. A glamourous robbery victim has PC Cameron Tait and PC Gary Best tying themselves in knots trying to impress her. Tait conspires to have Best recalled to the station, and then gives the case some ""special attention"", but when PC Des Taviner is called out to the same house later in the day, he also leaves with a smile on his face. Feeling left out, Best also drops round, but is caught with his pants down when the woman's jealous husband - under surveillance by CID for a brutal beating - turns up. PC Nick Klein is heavily in debt to his drug dealer, Dexter. When he turns up to pay off part of the debt, he meets Dexter's girlfriend Amy - who looks somewhat familiar. The Bill - Season 20 - Episode 30
Dunbar tells Gold that Kent may be the press leak, and Kent finds himself banished to the Siberia of Sun Hill – the Coal Lane Estate. When he discovers a group of kids harassing a transvestite resident, he takes vigilante action when he arrests the ringleader, but the station's new CPS lawyer, Jonathan Fox, refuses to charge him. A series of professional robberies of vehicles from a transport company baffles CID, and it looks like an inside job. Rookie Lance Powell and Best blow the operation when they stumble upon the criminal's warehouse. Okaro is furious, and his reaction intrigues Dunbar, who is trying to prove he is racist. Meanwhile, Okaro asks Perkins to go undercover in prison.

Nixon and McAllister investigate when the stolen digger turns up at a transport site. Manson's suspicions are proven to be correct, but nobody else knows that Manson's tip-offs are coming from Beech. The arrival of Peter Cavanaugh, an Australian inspector on attachment to the NCIS, sets hearts a-flutter, but Meadows is furious when Manson's liaisons with Beech are revealed. Powell arrests a black teenager on suspicion of shoplifting, but cops a warning from Okaro to tread more carefully with the black community in future. An angry Powell is fair game for Thatcher and Dunbar, who are both seeking to prove that Okaro has it in for his black officers. Best is stunned when Powell tells him that he is gay.
