In the Chicago "Heights" district, elderly citizens are found dead: stripped to the bone, apparently by rats. Upon investigation, Kolchak finds a more sinister reason behind the murders: a rakshasa, a Hindu demon that can entrance its victims by taking the form of the person they trust most. Carl finds an elderly rakshasa hunter, who entrusts him with the only thing that can kill the rakshasa: crossbow bolts blessed by a priest of Brahma. However, to defeat the creature Kolchak must be able to bring himself to shoot whoever it is that he trusts the most.
